The most dangerous month in the car import business is December. Every year, dozens of Kenyan importers lose millions of shillings because they miscalculate the 8-Year Rule.
The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) is unforgiving. If a car exceeds the age limit by even one day upon arrival in Mombasa, it cannot be cleared. It must be crushed or re-exported at your expense.
As of today (December 2025), the window for 2018 units has officially closed. Here is the math you need to survive the transition to 2026.
1. The "Current Year Minus 7" Formula
Kenya allows vehicles that are up to 8 years old. The safe formula dealers use is Current Year - 7.

2. The "Shipping Gap" Trap
The rule applies to the date of Arrival in Mombasa, not the date of purchase.
🛑 STOP BUYING 2018 MODELS
- The Timeline: It takes roughly 30 to 45 days for a car to go from a Japanese auction house to Mombasa.
- The Reality: If you buy a car today (Dec 2, 2025), the earliest it will likely dock in Mombasa is January 15, 2026.
- The Consequence: If that car is a 2018 model, it arrives in 2026. It is now "Too Old" by KRA standards. It will be rejected.
3. The New Strategy: Target 2019
Since 2018 is now "Dead Stock," you must shift your bidding filter to 2019.
- Why 2019? In January 2026, the 2019 models become the "oldest" (and therefore cheapest) allowed cars.
- The Opportunity: Prices for 2019 units in Japan often drop slightly in December as local Japanese dealers clear stock. Now is the perfect time to buy a 2019 unit to land in Jan/Feb 2026 as fresh, legal stock.
4. Emergency: "I already bought a 2018!"
If you have a 2018 unit currently on the high seas, check your ETA immediately.
- ETA Dec 28: You are safe, but it is close. Pray for no delays.
- ETA Jan 2: You are in trouble. Contact your clearing agent immediately. Sometimes, if the manifest was lodged in 2025, KRA may grant an exception, but strict interpretation is physical arrival.
