2020 Toyota Yaris Cross: A Carimports.co.ke Review

The Big Picture

The 2020 Toyota Yaris Cross (XP210) is the car Nairobi didn't know it needed. Origin: Japan (Iwate). First Generation: Launched in 2020 to sit below the C-HR. Unlike the standard Yaris hatchback, this is a proper mini-SUV with increased ground clearance and optional All-Wheel Drive. It brings hybrid efficiency to a form factor that can actually handle speed bumps.

Engine Options & Model Codes

Two flavors of efficiency:

  • MXPB10 (1.5L Petrol): 120 HP. Standard 3-cylinder Dynamic Force engine. It uses a Direct Shift-CVT (with a launch gear) which eliminates the "rubber band" feel of older CVTs.
  • MXPJ10/15 (1.5L Hybrid): 116 HP Combined. RECOMMENDED The hybrid system is superb, running on electric power up to 80% of the time in city traffic. The MXPJ15 version adds E-Four (Electric 4WD) for better grip in the rain.

Interior & Practicality

  • 40:20:40 Split: The rear seats fold in three sections (on Z trim), allowing you to carry long items like skis (or curtain rods) while still seating two passengers in the back.
  • Boot Space: 390 Litres. It has a clever flex-floor board that can be lowered for depth or raised to create a flat loading lip.

Infotainment & Technology

Standard models come with a Display Audio system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Z grade features a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a Head-Up Display (HUD), features usually reserved for luxury cars.

Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs

Consumption: 26–30 km/L (Hybrid) is achievable in Nairobi traffic. The petrol version manages a respectable 18 km/L.
Service: It shares parts with the standard Yaris and some Corolla components, so maintenance is affordable. Hybrid batteries are reliable but check the cooling fan filter under the rear seat.

Suitability for Kenyan Roads

170mm Clearance: This is the key selling point. It sits 30mm higher than the Yaris hatch, which is just enough to clear standard speed bumps without scraping. The E-Four AWD system provides confidence on loose gravel driveways.

Safety & Reliability

Toyota Safety Sense comes standard on most imports, including Pre-Collision System and Radar Cruise Control. Reliability is typical Toyota bulletproof status.

The Ci Verdict

Who is this for? The young professional living in Kilimani who wants a stylish, fuel-sipping daily driver.

Who is it NOT for? Large families; the rear seat legroom is tight for adults on long journeys.
