2020 Land Rover Defender 110: A Carimports.co.ke Review

The Big Picture

The 2020 Land Rover Defender (L663) is the most controversial yet capable SUV of the decade. Origin: Nitra, Slovakia. Generations: It replaces the legendary "Box" (L316) that ceased production in 2016. While the purists cried about the switch to a unibody chassis, the L663 is objectively superior in every measurable metric. In Kenya, it has quickly become the new face of "New Money," replacing the Prado J150 on the driveways of Karen and Runda.

Engine Options & Model Codes

Choosing the right engine is critical for resale value in Kenya:

  • D240 (2.0L Diesel): 237 HP / 430 Nm. The sensible choice. It uses the Ingenium diesel engine. While reliable, it feels slightly underpowered for highway overtaking.
  • P400 (3.0L MHEV Petrol): 395 HP / 550 Nm. RECOMMENDED This inline-6 features a mild-hybrid system and an electric supercharger. It is fast, smooth, and surprisingly efficient for its size.

Interior & Practicality

  • Industrial Chic: The interior features exposed screws and a powder-coated magnesium cross-beam. It is designed to be durable, not just pretty. The floor is rubberized, meaning you can (theoretically) hose it out after a muddy safari.
  • Pivi Pro: The 10-inch touchscreen is a quantum leap over the old InControl system. It is responsive, supports over-the-air updates, and has wireless Apple CarPlay.

Infotainment & Technology

The "ClearSight" ground view camera makes the bonnet invisible, allowing you to see exactly where your front wheels are—invaluable for navigating rocky trails in Laikipia. The Meridian sound system is excellent, capable of drowning out wind noise at 120 km/h.

Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs

Consumption: 8–10 km/L (Diesel) vs 6–8 km/L (P400 Petrol).
Service: This is a complex machine. The air suspension and MHEV electrical systems require specialized diagnostic tools. Do not service this at a "Juakali" garage. Parts are expensive and often require importation.

Suitability for Kenyan Roads

Unmatched: It rides better than a Prado on tarmac and out-climbs a Land Cruiser 70 Series off-road. The air suspension can raise the body to 291mm, clearing almost any obstacle. It is the ultimate "dual-purpose" vehicle for Kenya.

Safety & Reliability

Euro NCAP gave it 5 stars. It is built like a tank (monocoque is 3x stiffer than body-on-frame). Reliability has been better than early Range Rovers, but ensure software updates are current to avoid electrical gremlins.

The Ci Verdict

Who is this for? The adventurer who actually leaves the tarmac, or the executive who wants to project an image of rugged capability.

Who is it NOT for? Those expecting the wafting "cloud-like" ride of a Range Rover Vogue—the Defender is firmer.
