The Big Picture
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB (X247) is the car families didn't know they needed until it arrived. Launched globally in 2019 as the First Generation, it slots between the GLA and GLC. It is boxy, rugged, and crucially, offers 7 seats in a compact footprint. It’s affectionately known as the "Baby G-Wagon" due to its upright stance. For Kenyan families who want a 7-seater German car without paying GLE/GLS prices, this is the solution.

Engine Options & Model Codes
Based on the MFA2 platform (FWD bias), it offers efficiency over raw power:
-
GLB 200 (1.3L Turbo): 161 HP. RECOMMENDED Uses the M282 engine (Renault co-developed). It is surprisingly capable for its size and very tax-friendly to import.
-
GLB 250 4MATIC (2.0L Turbo): 221 HP. Uses the M260 engine. Much faster and comes with AWD (4MATIC). Choose this if you do lots of highway driving with a full load.
Interior & Practicality
- The 3rd Row: The 6th and 7th seats are strictly for children (under 5'6"). They fold flat into the floor. When up, boot space is minimal (130L), but with them down, you get a massive 570L boot.
- MBUX Tech: Comes with the dual-screen widescreen cockpit. The "Hey Mercedes" voice assistant and high-resolution graphics make it feel like a mini S-Class inside.
Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs
- Consumption: 13–15 km/l (GLB 200). The 7-speed DCT gearbox is efficient.
- Service: It is a premium car. Minor service ~Ksh 25,000. Parts like the LED headlights or radar sensors are expensive if damaged.
- Resale: High demand. Being the cheapest 7-seater Mercedes ensures it will hold value very well in Kenya.
Suitability for Kenyan Roads
Ground Clearance: At 200mm, it is excellent. The short overhangs (wheels at corners) help it clear steep bumps. It handles rougher roads better than the GLA or C-Class. 4MATIC models have an "Off-Road" mode that helps in light mud.
Safety & Reliability
5-Star Euro NCAP rating. Includes Active Brake Assist and Crosswind Assist. Reliability of the 1.3L engine is solid, but the complex electronics (MBUX) can have occasional glitches requiring software updates.

The Ci Verdict
Who is this for? The family that needs 7 seats for occasional school runs but wants a premium badge and manageable size. Who is it NOT for? Those expecting S-Class ride quality—it rides firmly like the A-Class it is based on.
