2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate: A Carimports.co.ke Review
The Big Picture
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate (S213) is the wagon that makes SUVs look pointless. Origin: Germany (Sindelfingen). First Generation: The wagon lineage began with the S123 in 1978. Current Generation: S214 (Launched 2024). The 2020 Facelift introduced sharper styling, the new MBUX system with the "Hey Mercedes" voice assistant, and a capacitive steering wheel. In Kenya, the All-Terrain version is the unicorn—lifting the suspension to tackle bad roads while keeping the elegance of a sedan.
Quick Specs

640 - 1820 L
194 - 367 HP
Engine Options & Model Codes
Efficient cruising or all-road power:
- E 220 d (2.0L Diesel): 194 HP / 400 Nm. The OM654 engine is the benchmark for 2.0L diesels. It is refined, torquey, and can achieve 20 km/L on the Mombasa highway.
- E 450 All-Terrain (3.0L Inline-6): 367 HP. The rugged choice. It features EQ Boost mild-hybrid tech and standard 4MATIC all-wheel drive for loose surfaces.
Interior & Practicality
- The Boot King: With 640 Litres of space with seats up, it swallows more luggage than a GLE. Fold the seats flat, and you have a 1,820-litre van. The load lip is low, making it easy to slide in heavy items.
- MBUX Update: The facelift introduced the touchpad controller and touchscreen capability, replacing the old rotary dial. The new steering wheel has capacitive sensors that detect your hands for semi-autonomous driving.
Infotainment & Technology
The dual 12.3-inch widescreen cockpit is standard on high-spec models. The "Hey Mercedes" voice control actually works well for tasks like "I'm cold" (raises temperature) or "Change ambient lighting to Blue."
Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs
Consumption: 18–20 km/L (E 220 d). It is incredibly frugal. The E 450 manages 10-12 km/L.
Service: Parts for the E 220 d are widely available. The All-Terrain model has specific body cladding and air suspension parts that may need special ordering. Rear air suspension is standard on all Estates (self-leveling), so check for leaks.
Suitability for Kenyan Roads
All-Terrain Option: If you can find an E-Class All-Terrain, buy it. It has 156mm of clearance and 4MATIC standard, handling gravel roads with ease. The standard Avantgarde estate sits lower (approx 135mm), so care is needed on bumps.
Safety & Reliability
The E-Class is one of the safest cars on the road, with Active Brake Assist standard. The OM654 diesel is generally reliable, but requires high-quality diesel (low sulphur) to prevent DPF clogging.
Price in Kenya
| Trim Level | Import Cost (Approx) |
|---|---|
| E 220 d Avantgarde | Ksh 6.5M - 7.5M |
| E 450 All-Terrain | Ksh 7.8M - 8.9M |
The Ci Verdict
Who is this for? The pragmatist who needs huge space but refuses to drive a high-center-of-gravity SUV.
Who is it NOT for? Those who think "Estate" means "Hearse"—get over it, this is cool.
