2019 Citroen Berlingo: A Carimports.co.ke Review

The Big Picture

The 2019 Citroen Berlingo (K9) is the ultimate family tool. Origin: France (Built in Spain/Portugal). First Generation: Launched in 1996, inventing the "Ludospace" (Leisure Activity Vehicle) segment. Current Generation: 3rd Generation (K9, launched 2018). This generation stopped trying to be just a van with windows and became a proper MPV. It uses the EMP2 platform (shared with the Peugeot 3008) for the front end, giving it car-like handling and safety, while retaining the massive boxy rear for cargo.

Quick Specs

Clearance 160 mm
Tank Size 50 Litres
Power 100 - 130 HP
Size M or XL

Engine Options & Model Codes

PSA engines are efficient and punchy:

  • 1.5L BlueHDi (Diesel): 100 HP or 130 HP. STANDARD This Euro 6 diesel is smooth and incredibly efficient (20 km/l+). The 130 HP version comes with the excellent EAT8 (8-speed automatic) gearbox.
  • 1.2L PureTech (Petrol): 110 HP. A 3-cylinder turbo petrol. Good for city use, but works hard on the highway with a full load.

Interior & Practicality

  • Three Individual Rear Seats: Unlike most cars, the rear row has three separate, equal-sized seats. This means you can fit three child car seats side-by-side.
  • Modutop: The optional floating roof storage arch is translucent and adds massive storage for light items like jackets or toys. 28 storage compartments in total!

Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs

  • Consumption: 18–22 km/l (BlueHDi). It rivals a hybrid for economy.
  • Service: Citroen parts are not common in downtown shops. You need a specialist who deals with PSA (Peugeot/Citroen) cars. Consumables are shared with the Peugeot Rifter and Opel Combo.
  • AdBlue: The BlueHDi system requires AdBlue. The tank is easy to fill (next to diesel cap).

Suitability for Kenyan Roads

Soft & Supple: The suspension is tuned for comfort, soaking up Kenyan potholes brilliantly. 160mm clearance is decent. It handles rough roads surprisingly well for a FWD van.

Safety & Reliability

4-Star Euro NCAP rating. Features Lane Keep Assist and Active Safety Brake. Reliability of the 1.5 BlueHDi is good, but the AdBlue injector can be a weak point (common PSA issue).

The Ci Verdict

Who is this for? The practical parent who values space and economy over badge prestige. It fits bikes, prams, and dogs effortlessly. Who is it NOT for? Badge snobs—it is still a "van with windows" to some.
