The 2019 Jeep Renegade is the Jeep for people who live in Kilimani but dream of the Kalahari. Launched in 2014 as the brand's first subcompact SUV (and the first built in Italy alongside the Fiat 500X), it brought the iconic seven-slot grille to the masses. The 2019 facelift is critical because it ditched the older, thirsty engines for efficient, punchy Turbo units. It oozes personality in a segment full of boring jellybeans.

The 2019 update introduced the "GSE" (Global Small Engine) family:

• 1.3L Turbo (GSE T4): 150 HP or 180 HP. RECOMMENDED Replaced the 1.4L MultiAir. It is smoother, has more torque (270 Nm), and is paired with a 6-speed DCT (FWD) or 9-speed Auto (4WD). It feels surprisingly quick.
• 1.0L Turbo (GSE T3): 120 HP. A 3-cylinder option for strict fuel economy. It struggles a bit with the Renegade's boxy weight on highways.

• Easter Eggs: Jeep designers hid little details everywhere—a map of Moab in the cupholder, a Willys Jeep on the windscreen. It makes the car feel special.
• Boxy Space: The square shape means headroom is excellent, even for tall passengers. However, the boot (351 Litres) is smaller than a Honda Vezel.

• Consumption: 12–14 km/l (1.3L Turbo). The boxy shape acts like a parachute at high speeds, hurting highway economy.
• Service: It is a Fiat underneath. Parts are available but not as common as Toyota. Electronics (especially the infotainment) can be glitchy. You need a mechanic who understands Italian/American systems.
• Resale: It depreciates faster than Japanese rivals. Great news if you are buying used, bad news if you plan to sell in 2 years.

Trailhawk vs Standard: The standard FWD model has 175mm clearance, which is decent. The Trailhawk version is a beast with 210mm clearance, skid plates, and "Rock" mode. If you actually go off-road, find a Trailhawk. Otherwise, the standard model handles Nairobi potholes just fine.

3-Star Euro NCAP rating (2019 test), which was a disappointment compared to rivals. It lacks some standard active safety tech found in the Mazda CX-3. Reliability is average; check for oil consumption on early turbo models.
